With the number of mobile devices entering the classroom growing (whether it be in 1:1′s or BYOD’s), the topic of digital cheating and academic dishonesty is bound to arise at some point.

The infographic below highlights multiple sectors of cheating from kindergarten to high school and college to the working world in 4 sections:

While mobile devices are a relatively new venue for cheating, banning them in the classroom would abolish a wealth of learning app-ortunities (pardon the pun). Students were cheating in clever ways far before the influx of mobile devices in the classroom… Case in point:

- Include essays on assessments
- Create specific class policies on in-class use of mobile technology (similar to the honor code)
- Create multiple versions of the assessment and use google-proof questions

As Lisa mentioned a honor code seems important. Building a class culture of trust, responsibility along with clear policies and guidelines for how and when to use mobile devices seem an additional method to assist children in learning how to be a responsible student. I also think (and this is just my opinion) that the over emphasis on tests is part of the problem. I’d like to see educators go towards more authentic type assessments where the students can use digital devices and create projects or products to show what they have learned…the pressure to cheat may lessen as the emphasis on testing lessens.
